    Problem with IP

    So,

Em and I now have AoC, but we both can't log on at the same time because the game see's that we both have the same IP and auto-logs the other person off. We have a cable modem and our connection then goes through a router to our computer.

Any ideas how to work past this one?

That's really odd, I know of a number of couples who are playing at the same time with no difficulty.  I'd go to tech support with this one.

    Re: Problem with IP

It might be because: We got a friend of ours to buy 2 copies of the game in the states. She then emailed us the cd keys before mailing the actual game to us, and we just borrowed a copy of the game from our friend to install in on our computers. We then used our emailed cd keys to install the game and create accounts.

Maybe the CD installs are encoded? And thats what is causing one of us to boot the other off?

    Re: Problem with IP

The installation media doesn't matter, most of us are playing with patched beta clients and I know that Patricia and her SO are playing simultaneously on US servers with EU media (after changing the config file to point to US).  As long as you have separate accounts with separate keys I can't see why it would happen.

It almost sounds like you're using the same key for both accounts somehow....

The only thing I can think of is that Funcom might be trying to prevent gold farmers from your region - but I can't fathom why they would do it that way.

    Re: Problem with IP

The problem is very odd indeed.  If you could have tested this from two different internet connections (ie, so you get two different IPs), it'd probably work, but I can't say for certain, of course.

I suspect, though, that the problem is NAT related.  NAT = Network Address Translation.  It wouldn't be the first time NAT is making trouble for people.

If NAT really is the problem, this can be for several reasons.  It could be that Funcom is pulling some stunt to avoid gold-spammers.  I think that would be surprising, but it is a possibility.  That you can log on Em logs in first, and then you, however, makes that rather unlikely.

NAT in general is the cause of a lot of problems.  It _could_ be your router not handling it properly.  Your router will have to keep track of Em's and your connections at the same time, and sending the traffic to the right computer.  Usually, this shouldn't be a problem, but sometimes, it still is.

But you've both been logged in at the same time, right?  I doubt you'd get past the account creation, though I suppose it's theoretically possible.

But what happens if you log in with your account from Em's computer, and Em's from your computer?  ie, switch from the way you normally do it?  That too might help give an indication on whether this is caused by your PCs, at least.

I'm going to side with Patricia on this one.

Out of curiousity, Ragna, what router are you guys using?

    Re: Problem with IP

At the moment we are using a D-Link Airplus Xtreme G Router.

We also had a new develop, I was playing Tabula Rasa waiting for Emarine to get to her character screen. When she finally did get to the character screen and attempted to log into the world it booted me off Tabula Rasa too, then gave me a message network cable has become unplugged. Lately she can get to the character screen, but can't load into the game before it says that she was disconnected.

    Re: Problem with IP

That is almost certainly your NAT device causing your ills.

    Re: Problem with IP

D-link... I really don't like those.  They are also known to cause problems with VPN tunnels, and other stuff.

Are you two using wireless?  If you are, just as a test, could you try using cables?  For some strange reason, that seems to solve some of the rather odd Dlink issues I've seen.

It _might_ not be the router, but there's a very good chance it is.  Is there anyone you can borrow a router (not Dlink) from, so you can test?

    Re: Problem with IP

We aren't using wireless. At the moment we are both plugged in using cables, I shut off the wireless option after the first time we found out someone was using our connection for something.

Not much in the way of borrowing someone else's router around here because of our situation.

Are all D-Link routers crap? If so, what do you two recommend for a replacement? Options are limited here but they have a few brands (unfortunately most are D-links lol)

    Re: Problem with IP

I'm running an old wired Linksys on my end... I haven't updated the firmware past 2004 because it seems to break it when I do. I had to rollback the code to get a stable router again. This had me looking at D-Links when I thought about upgrading, but if you browse the reviews of both brands at newegg.com, you'll find that people either have no problems with them or hate them with a passion. That said, I've been running on this same router since 2001.

I'll probably go with a Linksys WRT54GL when I do upgrade soon. I'm still looking at Netgear as well. The reviews at newegg are pretty useful for the most part.

    Re: Problem with IP

I'm currently using a Linksys WRT350N and have been pretty happy with it.

A couple of routers ago, we used to use netgear, but we had some issues with the wireless and had a really bad experience with their customer support, so we've sworn never to by Netgear again. :)

    Re: Problem with IP

I don't care for D-Link. Granted, we use them for testing at work, amongst other models, and there are others that I dislike even more.

Its been my personal experience to go with LinkSys. They've never steered me wrong in all the years I've been using them.

I'd be curious to come on over and check out your set up. Out of stupid curiosity, what are your IP addresses showing as when both of you are hooked up through the router?

    Re: Problem with IP

This sounds like the same sort of restriction we have set up with allegiance.  Have you guys ever logged on on the other persons computer? In allegiance that's what "links" accounts so that may be the same for other games.
